It was once said that if you didn’t want to live in London, you didn’t want to live at all.
This is far and away from how many Londoners feel about their city today, and the rest of the United Kingdom isn’t doing much better under the country’s increasingly authoritarian government.
There is a high degree of irony here in that the same country that gave us the Magna Carta — the document that would eventually codify liberal democracy as we know it today — is the country that is now fining comedians for making off-color jokes on the internet, suppressing online speech, and arresting journalists for having the wrong opinion.
It isn’t just British culture that’s taking a hit. Prime Minister Theresa May is not far off from making the U.K. a vassal state of the European Union with her infamous Chequers agreement. Essentially, it would keep the U.K. in the EU’s common market, but remove the country’s ability have any say in how it is governed. Britain would arguably enjoy more independence by remaining in the EU…
Thankfully, there are still “classical liberals” left in the country that decry what was once the imperial envy of the world has become. Carl Benjamin, better known online as Sargon of Akkad, is one of them — and he’s now set his sites on one of his country’s biggest violators of free speech and basic civil rights: London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
While in office, Khan has OK’ed his city’s laughable “knife control” policy, and also green-lit a massive demonstration against the president of his country’s closest ally. In trying to defend this move, Khan has said it’s part of free speech. But, when the tables are turned on him, you can tell he has a completely different attitude.
